Healthy dogs can become infected through direct contact with sick dogs or indirect contact with kennel equipment contaminated with scabies mites and their eggs. Damp kennels, unhygienic dogs, high skin surface moisture and low lung function can promote the development of the disease. Scabies mites parasitize on the skin of Schnauzers, bite, move, chew and puncture the skin, causing skin itching, oozing, peeling, keratosis, hypertrophy and hair loss. At the same time, dogs scratch, rub, and bite the skin, causing skin trauma.

Symptoms of Schnauzer skin disease

The disease mainly occurs on the Schnauzer’s head (the bridge of the nose, eye sockets, and the base of the auricle), and sometimes also starts on the chest and abdomen. lower body, armpits, inner thighs and tail root, and then spread to the whole body.

At the beginning of the disease, erythema appears on the skin, followed by small nodules, especially in areas where the skin is thin. Small blisters or even pustules can be seen. In addition, there is a large amount of bran-like desquamation or crusted eczema. Then the skin becomes thickened, the coat falls off, and the surface is covered with scabs. When the scabs are removed, they appear bright red and moist, often accompanied by bleeding. Thickened skin, especially on the face, neck, and chest, often forms wrinkles.

Acute pruritus occurs throughout the course of the disease. Itching can become more severe when body temperature rises or when body temperature rises after exercise. Sick Schnauzers will chew, rub, and fidget all day long, affecting normal eating and rest, reducing digestion and absorption functions, gradually losing weight, and then passing gas or even dying. When it occurs around the eyes, severe cases can lead to blindness.
