Undull fever

Canine brucellosis is a highly contagious infection caused by the bacterium Brucella. Infected dogs often develop reproductive tract infections or sexually transmitted infections. The disease can cause reproductive problems such as infertility, spontaneous abortion, and can spread to the spinal discs, eyes, kidneys, or brain. This disease is more common in dogs that have not been spayed or neutered. It is contracted through contact with aborted fetuses and the uterus of infected bitches (which can be contracted through mating) and may be airborne in some cases. The bacteria enter the body through the mucous membranes and spread from there to the lymph nodes and spleen. It also sometimes spreads to the uterus, placenta, and prostate, among other internal organs.

Symptoms of unduplicate fever

Bitches infected with undull fever will cause miscarriage or premature death of puppies. There is no clinical reaction in bitches with undull fever. However, in some cases, the fertility rate may decrease, even if the baby is born. It is also possible to die young after coming down. This may be due to the fetus being infected with undulant fever early in its development.

In both male and female dogs, spinal cord infection (discitis) may occur, which can cause back pain and hind leg weakness or even paralysis. And eye inflammation can occur in both genders.

Undulant fever cannot detect Brucella bacteria in the blood or affected tissues, so it is usually diagnosed with a titer test.

Treatment:

Brucellosis is difficult to treat successfully. The combination of minocycline and streptomycin is considered the most effective but expensive. Tetracyclines can be substituted for minocycline to reduce cost but also reduce the effectiveness of treatment. All infected animals should be spayed or neutered to prevent sexual transmission. Even with treatment, all infected animals should be considered lifelong carriers of the disease. If infection is suspected at any time, disinfectants such as Roccal Rx and Betadine Rx can kill Brucella bacteria to limit the spread of disease.

Undulant fever can also be transmitted to humans. If a dog is sick, gloves should be worn and the environment should be disinfected.
