1. Use flea and flea-killing shampoo to bathe the dog

Although ordinary shampoo and dishwashing detergent can also kill fleas, special products are more effective. Read product labels carefully to determine the correct use of shampoo. Wet the dog's body with warm water and apply the flea shampoo into the hair. Wait at least 10 minutes, then rinse with warm water. Flea shampoos often contain pyrethrin, a chemical used to kill fleas. Flea shampoo can kill fleas and ticks that are already on your dog.

2. Buy a bottle of flea-killing spray

Lice-killing and flea-killing sprays are generally packaged in spray bottles and squeeze bottles. For best results, choose a spray that contains an adulticide and an insect growth regulator to ensure that both adult fleas and eggs are killed. Use the spray correctly according to your veterinarian's instructions and the instructions on the label. Do this in a well-ventilated area and be careful not to spray into your dog's eyes. Wear gloves to protect yourself when using the spray. When spraying on sensitive areas (such as the face), spray the product onto a glove first and then apply it to the dog to avoid spraying into the dog's eyes, mouth or ears.

3. Try flea powder

This powder can be purchased without a veterinary prescription and works similarly to a spray. Read the directions on the label to confirm proper usage. If you are unsure, always ask your veterinarian before use. Usually just spreading a thin layer of powder on your dog's fur is enough and there is no need to wash it off. Note that this powder will make the dog's hair feel gritty and coarse, and the powder needs to be replenished at any time. Start at the dog's head and slowly spread toward the tail, making sure the powder covers all skin. Don’t forget to sprinkle the powder on your dog’s bedding. If necessary, it can be repeated once a week.

4. Prepare medicated lotion

After your dog is infected with fleas, you should apply lotion on its hair. Mix the lotion according to the label on the package, and ask your veterinarian for more detailed instructions if necessary. Also known as a flea bath, a flea bath involves soaking your dog in a diluted solution. Another method is to pour the solution directly onto your dog's fur and allow the hair to absorb the solution. Both methods require the dog's entire body to be wetted and cannot just treat specific areas. Do this in a well-ventilated area. Most of the flea cleaning solution should remain on the dog and does not need to be washed off. These products often contain pyrethrins, permethrin, and organophosphates.

5. Put a flea collar on your dog

The quality of flea collars varies. Many collars have a limited flea killing range and can only kill fleas near the collar (around the dog’s head and shoulders). However, if used correctly, a good quality flea collar can repel or kill fleas. Choose the right collar for your dog's age and weight. Put 2 fingers under the collar to make sure it fits snug enough but not too tight. After putting the collar on your dog, cut off the excess length. Don't let your dog chew the end of the collar.
