How to brush a Yorkie's teeth

How to brush your Yorkie’s teeth? Choose Yorkie-specific toothpaste and toothbrush, do not use human toothpaste; slowly bring the toothbrush stained with toothpaste closer to your Yorkie, attracting it to smell or even lick the toothpaste. Don’t do it the first time. Put the toothbrush into the Yorkie's mouth; after the Yorkie is familiar with the toothbrush and toothpaste, open the dog's lips with your hand. This action also requires it to gradually adapt.
Choose Yorkie professional toothpaste and a soft-bristled brush. The pet's toothpaste has a scent that can be absorbed, and there is no need to rinse the mouth. Avoid using human toothpaste and sodium bicarbonate, as these often contain ingredients that your dog will find intolerable.
The owner slowly brings the toothbrush dipped in toothpaste close to the dog, and then stops to let it actively touch, smell and even lick the toothpaste. This process can be carried out while playing to keep the dog in a relaxed and happy mood. If the dog adapts slowly, this process may take two to three days. Never force the toothbrush into its mouth the first time!
After Yorkie becomes less wary of toothbrushes and toothpaste, the owner can open its lips with one hand to expose its gums and teeth. This action requires the dog to get used to having its mouth touched, otherwise it may open its mouth and bite. Therefore, the dog owner may wish to play with it for a while and wait until it relaxes before proceeding.
The dog owner exposes the dog’s teeth with one hand, and uses the other hand to brush the dog’s teeth with a toothbrush in circular motions, mainly to clean the outer tooth surfaces, teeth gaps and food residues between the teeth. The gaps between the inside of the teeth and the molar surfaces are lickable with the tongue and are less likely to accumulate dirt, so you can focus on brushing the outside of the teeth.
For the first few days, give it a simple brush when you hold it, as usual. Use your fingers to gently stroke its cheek for a minute or two. You can give it appropriate protection and praise.
If your Yorkie already has tartar, you can use a cotton swab soaked in cold water and some toothpaste to remove it. However, if you are not confident enough, it is best to seek help from a professional veterinarian to prevent yourself from injuring your Yorkie’s gums.
