How do pet hospitals disinfect the indoor environment?

For those who specialize in pet business or have many pets at home, they need to disinfect the room frequently to ensure the health of people and animals.

The daily disinfection of cat houses, kennels and pet-raising homes can be said to be the highest cost-return task. Especially for pet breeding families, if daily disinfection is not done properly and an infectious disease breaks out, you will regret it.

However, when we face an endless stream of disinfection products on the market, we are often confused, what method should I choose? What type of product should I choose? Many disinfection products have little influence on the efficacy of the product. The descriptions are vague, and many products even don’t give you a clear ingredient list in the ingredient description column.

Some hospitals and certain pet doctors will recommend products that suppliers ask them to recommend, such as DuPont Virco. I have also been promoted by several pet doctors about this product. Whether it's good or not, we'll talk about it later.

The more common disinfection products on the market for environmental disinfection mainly include the following categories:

5% sodium hypochlorite (commonly known as 84)

Quaternary ammonium salts (Jielijia, Baidusha, etc.)

Potassium peroxymonosulfate compound salt (DuPont Virco, Trifectant, etc.)

Dimethylphenol (Dettol, Velox, etc.)

The above are four very common types. Almost when we go to Taobao to search for "cattery disinfection", "disinfectant" and "disinfectant water", we will find these types of products. But the most useful and effective ones are actually not among these categories. Let me first introduce the characteristics of these categories. Then let’s introduce today’s protagonist.

The following table can illustrate the characteristics of these four types of products.

Secondary wiping means that after disinfection, the disinfected surface must be scrubbed with clean water to remove residual disinfectant

Among the above types of products, probably the most widely used ones in catteries and pet homes are 84 and DuPont Virco.

For 84, the effect is actually pretty good, but personally I can’t stand its smell. In addition, for catteries with cat ringworm, high concentrations must be used to be effective, which will have a great corrosive effect on the metal cat cages. In addition, it is weakly poisonous. After disinfection, the floor needs to be mopped and wiped with clean water. Therefore, its use is not recommended.

DuPont Virco is the choice of many pet parents. However, this product is more expensive in small bags, cannot be used in large barrels, is not stored properly, and is easy to expire. In addition, for environments with cat ringworm, judging from the practice in the past two years, the effect is very good.General. Therefore it is not recommended either.

Next, let’s reveal today’s two protagonists.

In fact, many hospitals generally use a combination of physical disinfection and chemical disinfection to disinfect the environment.

Let’s talk about chemical disinfection first. Like everyone else, hospitals only use spraying or wiping. It’s just that, generally few hospitals use the above four common products. Even if some doctors strongly recommend DuPont Virco, it is only because it is highly profitable.

The disinfectant used in hospitals is called chlorine dioxide.

Chlorine dioxide is actually an internationally recognized highly efficient disinfectant and sterilizer. It can be said to be the best among chlorine-containing disinfectants. It can kill bacterial propagules, bacterial spores, fungi, mycobacteria and various types of viruses, almost all microorganisms! More importantly, it will not produce any resistance!

In addition to the above advantages, it is also an excellent bleach, deodorant and oxidant. It can quickly decompose pet feces, urine and other volatile matter in the air to make the air fresher. In addition, it is safe and has no residue, and does not cause any irritation to pets or people. Therefore, there is no need for secondary scrubbing.

In fact, chlorine dioxide products are widely used in the fish farming industry. When you search for such products on Taobao, almost all fish farming enthusiasts or fish farms are buying them. Many pet hospitals are also quietly using this product to disinfect the environment. The reason they don't tell outsiders is that this product is too cheap. There is no profit at all.

We simply searched Taobao and found that there are many such products, but many people don’t know that they can also be used to disinfect the home environment.

Below I will give you some of the ways I use this thing to disinfect. This product is available in effervescent tablets, liquid and powder form. I use effervescent tablets. When diluting, I prepare a pastry scale for easy weighing.

Clothing disinfection: 50 - 80 mg/L water, soak for 3 - 5 minutes, then dry.

Various countertops, walls, and appliances: 250 - 500 mg/L, just wipe once each time.

Pet products and fabrics: 250 - 500 mg/L, soak for 30 minutes.

Floor disinfection: 500 - 1000 mg/L spray or wash and mop for at least 30 minutes.

Air spray in the presence of people and pets: 10 - 20 mg/L.

When there are no people or pets: Prepare the solution at 3000 mg/L and divide it into several basins to prevent fumigation in different locations indoors. And close the doors and windows3-8 hours.

Usually, the product we buy is 1g per pill, and 1g = 1000mg. So I won’t teach you how many slices to use and how to mix them.

Chlorine dioxide is really easy to use and super cheap. I bought a big pack for 30 yuan and have been using it for two years and haven’t run out of it yet.

In addition to the above-mentioned disinfection methods, hospitals also use ultraviolet disinfection. It uses ultraviolet light for disinfection. This area is explained in detail in a lesson in "Home Diagnosis and Treatment of Cat Diseases", including how many watts of lamps to buy, how to control the humidity, and the corresponding values of effective antivirus surfaces and wattage. Because the demand for this thing in catteries will be relatively large, for ordinary pet-raising families, the above-mentioned chlorine dioxide is enough. Therefore, I will not expand on the ultraviolet disinfection method here. Article source: Cat Academy Official Account
