As the saying goes, "If your teeth are good, your appetite will be good, your body will be great, and you will eat better!" Teeth are a very critical part for dogs. They not only affect their appearance, but also affect their appetite and mood. If you don't pay attention to care at ordinary times, it may even threaten their lives in severe cases.

A normal healthy adult dog has 42 teeth, 20 upper teeth and 22 lower teeth, arranged in a zigzag shape. Because the structure of dogs' teeth is different from that of humans, they do not chew food. Most of the time, dogs swallow food directly. For dogs, teeth are rather a weapon that exists to protect their own safety. It’s easy to get sick if you don’t get regular cleaning and care.

As furry children’s closest family members, it is very important to thoroughly maintain their teeth.

Common diseases

Gingivitis

Inflammation of gum tissue is usually caused by dental plaque, dental calculus, subgingival calculus and other reasons. Sick animals may have symptoms such as bad breath, red and swollen gums, mild gum recession, and bleeding gums. This is the most suitable time for ultrasonic tooth cleaning treatment. If not treated in time, it will gradually evolve into periodontal disease.

Retention of deciduous teeth

Oral diseases are common in small dogs, mostly due to retention of incisors and canines. The presence of deciduous teeth will affect the growth of permanent teeth, and food residues and hair are prone to accumulate in this position. The deciduous teeth of dogs over 7 months old are difficult to fall off naturally. If they are not removed in time, a large amount of dental calculus will accumulate, which may lead to gingivitis and periodontitis.

Periodontal disease

Inflammation of periodontal tissue, usually accompanied by gingivitis or secondary to gum disease. Sick animals usually have symptoms such as bad breath, red and swollen gums, severe gum recession, alveolar bone dissolution, alveolar abscesses, and loose teeth. At this time, animals usually have more sensitive mouths, may lose appetite, prefer canned or soft food, and are reluctant to chew on toys, etc. If not treated in time, the animals will gradually lose their teeth, fistulas may appear on the face, and oronasal fistulas (the mouth and nasal cavity are connected) may occur. Due to osteolysis, the mandible may be fractured. As the infection progresses, some animals may develop myocarditis and kidney disease.
