What's going on with the puppy running wildly at home?

This crazy behavior may seem inexplicable, but your dog has already calculated the time. Whether you call it "rocket mode," "desperate racing," or "flying fast," this kind of crazy running activity is a necessary way for dogs to release energy. This kind of behavior is more common in puppies and young dogs, but if there are puppies around, older dogs will sometimes join in the crazy running action.

There is a professional term for this behavior of dogs. Veterinarians call this "Frenetic Random Activity Periods," or FRAP for short. FRAP usually occurs in the morning, evening, or after taking a shower. While it's an integral part of dogs' lives, it can freak out some people. If you want to guide your dog correctly, make it part of their daily schedule. Take your dog to a dog park or let them run around in your fenced-in backyard. If possible, take your dog off the leash and let them roam freely. But if you must keep your dog on a leash, you can increase your speed by jogging or riding a bicycle.

There are some warning signs before the dog starts running wildly. They usually jump up, squat down on their front feet, and wag their tails violently, which is their invitation to play. In turn, you can also tell them that it's time to start playtime by simulating this action (lowering your head and hands, raising your butt, and smiling on your face). In short, the dog’s energy-releasing activities should be guided, not suppressed.

If your dog starts to release energy at home, you can let it run around, or you can teach it not to run indoors. If your dog starts running around, you can put him in his crate for a minute or two. You can also calm your dog by applying gentle pressure to his shoulder blades - placing your hands firmly (but gently) on them until your dog lies down.

If you play with your dog when it runs wild at home, it may cause some unpleasant things, such as breaking a lamp or scratching the floor.

Certain breeds of dogs are more likely to run wild, such as energetic terriers or greyhounds. As dogs get older, their crazy running behavior will gradually decrease, so while you can still watch them being naughty, enjoy the show!
