Equipment

Several 18cm curved hemostatic forceps, 1 18cm straight hemostatic forceps, 1 pair of scissors (preferably surgical scissors), iodophor (do not use iodine) , some cotton swabs.

Steps

In the first step, two people cooperate, and one person grabs the corgi. It must be fixed so that the puppy cannot fall off from the hand during the operation. Another person prepares it with a curved hemostat.

The second step is to clasp the arc of the curved hemostat on the puppy's buttocks, clamp the tail so as not to injure the anus, and then tighten the hemostat.

The third step is to clamp the tail with the straight hemostatic forceps tightly against the curved hemostatic forceps. Then rotate the straight mouth hemostat. After a few turns, the tail will be disconnected.

The fourth step is to remove the straight hemostat and the tail, and use scissors to trim the exposed hair on the outside of the curved hemostat.

Step 5: Keep the curved hemostat clamped on the wound for more than 20 minutes, and then loosen the hemostat.

The sixth step is to loosen the curved hemostat and gently disinfect the wound with a cotton swab dipped in iodophor. Tail docking completed.

FAQ

Why do we need to use hemostats to cut off the tail?

There are three common methods of tail docking: rubber band tail docking, hemostat tail docking, and surgical tail docking. The most common one is to tighten the tail with a rubber band (or valve core, etc.) and wait for the tail to fall off naturally due to poor blood flow. This method of tail docking is the slowest, takes the longest to heal, and is almost 100% likely to cause infection. There is not much difference between hemostats and surgical tail docking, but surgical tail docking requires more professional skills and requires suturing, which is not suitable for individual operations. Hemostat is the most suitable method for individual operation. There is also less damage to the puppy.

Is tail docking safe?

Tail docking is a very safe operation. We once had a puppy who died of a heart attack on the 28th day. After an autopsy, it was confirmed to be congenital heart disease (congenital heart enlargement). Even with such physical conditions, the tail was docked on the third day of life and it was still safe. Therefore, tail docking itself does not pose any risk of death to the puppy. Some puppies who are born weak may have major stress reactions, such as loss of appetite and diarrhea.

When should tail docking begin?

It can be performed 3 days after birth. The recommended time is 3-5 days. During this period, the puppy is not sensitive to pain and the pain is minimal for the puppy. However, for some puppies who are born weak or have diseases after birth (such as colds), it is recommended to delay. If the puppy catches a cold, tail docking will worsen the puppy's cough. Generally, it can be done within 10 days. When it is more than 10 days, the puppy's pain begins to increase significantly. After 15 days, it becomes really painful. If you encounter problems and the tail is not docked in time, you can also choose to have the tail surgically docked when it is older.

Why tail docking?

This matter is not something we can decide, so we refuse to answer.

How to take care of your tail after docking?

In fact, no special care is needed. Observe the wound every day, because the female dog will lick the puppy at this time, and the wound will often be licked open. If the wound is not dry, disinfect it with iodophor 1-2 times a day. If you find that the wound is swollen, or there are lumps on your back, head, etc., please seek medical attention immediately. There is a small chance that tail docking will cause bacteria to enter through the wound and infect other parts of the skin.

Do not apply topical ointments to the wound because the bitch will lick it. Applying topical ointments will most likely cause indigestion or other side effects in the bitch.

What should I do if the tail wound bleeds?

First of all, the wound where the tail is docked cannot stop bleeding, so simply wipe it with an absorbent cotton ball, and then apply iodine for disinfection. Never use styptic powder. After my trial and comparison, styptic powder will greatly prolong the recovery time of the wound. And I tried it on my own wound. Although the styptic powder can stop the bleeding, it is really painful.
