Knowledge about seborrheic dermatitis in dogs

Seborrheic dermatitis in dogs is a disease of skin lipid metabolism disorder, which is common in several dog breeds such as German Shepherds and Shar-Peis. This disease is different from human seborrheic eczema. It is a type of seborrheic disease ranging from dandruff to severe dermatitis.

Symptoms of seborrheic dermatitis in dogs

Canine dermatitis occurs scatteredly on the back, head and extremities of the limbs. According to different symptoms, it can be divided into three types: dry, oily and dermatitis.
Dry type. The skin is dry and there are gray-white or silver fish scales scattered in the coat. The hair removal is light and the hair is sparse.
Oily type. The skin and coat at the base of the tail with developed sebaceous glands contain a lot of oil or have high-quality yellowish-brown lumps attached to them. There is a lot of earwax in the external auditory canal, and some may develop otitis externa. A special putrid odor can be smelled.
Dermatitis type. Affected dogs show itching, erythema, scales, severe hair loss, and obvious scab formation. The affected areas are more common on the back, ears, forehead, tail, lower chest, elbows, hocks, etc. Dogs will bite and itch due to itching, which will enlarge the affected area and worsen the condition.

Treatment methods for dog seborrheic dermatitis

Treatment options include anti-inflammatory, symptomatic treatment and supplementation of corresponding deficient substances
Treatment method one: prednisolone , 1~2 mg/kg, taken orally, twice a day until the symptoms are relieved
Treatment method two: increase nutrition, feed more high-protein, high-fat substances, inject vitamin A, vitamin D
