Causes of diabetes in dogs

Diabetes can occur in any disease or pathology that causes reduced insulin secretion, such as acute and chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic atrophy and fibrosis, pancreatic islet atrophy, hyaline degeneration and edema degeneration. This is because insulin can promote the transport of glucose by the cell membrane, the oxidation of sugar and the synthesis of glycogen, and inhibit the heterogeneity and decomposition of glycogen. If insulin is too low, glucose in the blood will increase, and glucose in the urine cannot be completely reabsorbed and is lost.

Symptoms of Diabetes in Dogs

Sick dogs are listless and easily fatigued; they are hungry and eat a lot, but lose weight and lose weight. Polyuria, polydipsia, fruit-like sweetness in urine, and glucose in urine can reach 4%-10%, or even 11%-16%. Sick dogs may have cataracts, corneal opacity, dry skin and mucous membranes, high urine specific gravity (1.035-1.060), orange-yellow color, containing sugar, and ketone bodies in the later stages. Blood sugar 8.4-28 mmol/L (150-500 mg/100 ml, normal is 60-100 mmol/100 ml).

Treatment of diabetes in dogs

Improve the diet, feed more meat and fat; treat with insulin, inject 1-10 units per kilogram of body weight every day, and use it according to the condition. Diabetes causes the loss of sugar in the urine, so glycogen, fat and protein are continuously decomposed, resulting in the accumulation of a large amount of intermediate metabolites (ketone bodies), causing acidosis and eventually diabetic coma. Treatment uses sodium bicarbonate, etc. to control acidosis.
