Symptoms of orchitis in dogs

1. The characteristics of acute orchitis are: localized fever, pain, swelling, the testicles are solid, and the dog may lick the testicles. Dogs may experience general malaise, fever, and loss of appetite.
2. The testicles of chronic granulomatous orchitis are swollen, firm and painless. The testis may have diffuse infiltration of macrophages. Chronic orchitis generally has no systemic symptoms.
3. For those with a longer course of disease, their testicles will atrophy, become fibrotic and become irregular. Adhesions between the testicles and the underlying scrotum are common.
4. The quality of semen decreases and abnormal sperm increase significantly. If necessary, serological testing for brucellosis can be performed.

Causes of orchitis in dogs

1. The most common cause of acute epididymitis in dogs is infection with Brucella canis.
2. Some mycoses, such as blastomycosis and coccidioidomycosis, can cause granulosine orchitis and epididymitis.
3. Trauma to the testicles and epididymis can sometimes cause inflammation and infection.
4. For dogs suffering from scrotal pyoderma, frequent licking of the scrotum can lead to bacterial infection of the underlying testicles and epididymis.
5. Canine distemper virus can cause inflammation of both testicles and epididymis.

Treatment of orchitis in dogs

1. Treat the sick dog with large doses of antibiotics throughout the body. In the case of local infection, local drainage must be performed while systemic treatment is performed.
2. Surgical removal of testicles and epididymis. Dogs that are Brucella positive and those with severe testicular damage, abscess or necrosis should have their testicles removed.
