Symptoms of rhinitis in dogs

1. Acute rhinitis: At the beginning of the disease, the dog's nasal mucosa appears flushed and swollen, sneezes frequently, and often shakes its head or scratches its nose with its front paws. Or runny nose from both nostrils. The nasal discharge is transparent and serous at first, and then turns into liquid-purulent nasal discharge. After drying, dry scabs form around the nostrils. When the condition worsens, the nasal mucosa swells significantly, causing the nasal cavity to become very narrow, causing difficulty in breathing and the sound of nasal congestion can be heard. When conjunctivitis occurs, the eyes may shed tears. When accompanied by pharyngitis, difficulty swallowing occurs, often accompanied by cough, and swollen lymph nodes in the mandible.
2. Chronic rhinitis: The onset is slow and continuous. The runny nose is sometimes more or less, and is usually mucopurulent. If inflammation is not treated in time, it may cause bone necrosis and tissue disintegration, so the nasal mucus may be mixed with blood streaks and accompanied by a foul smell. The most common cause of suffocation or encephalopathy is chronic rhinitis, and this phenomenon must be taken seriously.

Common causes of rhinitis in dogs

1. In cold weather, the dog’s nasal mucosa is irritated, causing congestion, exudation, and even bacteria remaining in the nasal cavity. Development and reproduction, causing mucosal inflammation.
2. Inhalation of ammonia, chlorine, smoke, dust, pollen, insects, etc. directly irritates the nasal mucosa, which will cause inflammation of the nasal mucosa.
3. Secondary to canine distemper, influenza, bronchitis, nasal mites, pharyngitis, paranasal sinusitis and other infectious diseases.

Treatment methods for dog rhinitis

1. To treat canine rhinitis, you first need to understand the cause, then put the dog in a warm place, stop training, and take appropriate rest.
2. Usually mild acute rhinitis can be cured without taking medicine. For severe rhinitis, choose the following medicine to flush the dog's nasal cavity: 1% saline solution, 2-3% boric acid solution, 1% sodium bicarbonate solution, and 0.1% potassium permanganate solution. Note: When flushing the nasal cavity, the dog's head must be lowered. After flushing, anti-inflammatory agent is dripped into the nostrils.
3. In order to promote vasoconstriction and reduce sensitivity, 0.1% epinephrine or phenyl salicylate (Saro) paraffin oil (1:10) can be dripped into the nostrils, and nasal instillation can also be used.
