Treatment methods for dog ascites

1. First identify whether the ascites is exudate or transudate, find out the original disease, and eliminate the ascites.
2. To enhance the absorption and discharge of leaked fluid, cardiotonic diuretics can be used, digitalis tablets 0.01 mg/kg body weight, taken orally, once a day. Furosemide injection 2-5 mg/kg body weight, 1-2 times/day.
3. When the dog has a large amount of ascites, puncture and drainage can be performed. Select the lowest point of the dog's abdominal wall for surgery, but be careful not to insert too much fluid to prevent the dog from collapse.
4. Intravenous infusion of 22-250 ml of compound 17 kinds of amino acids, 20-300 ml of dextrose, 0.5-4 ml of 10% vitamin C, 50-300 units of coenzyme A, and 10-100 mg of adenosine triphosphate. Then intravenous infusion, once a day.
5. You can try hormone therapy and vitamin therapy.
6. Feed the dog high-protein food and limit the dog’s drinking water.

Causes of hydroperitoneum in dogs

1. Exudate retention: During peritonitis, exudate increases and the reabsorption capacity of the peritoneum decreases.
2. Hypoalbuminemia: Due to the lack of protein in the body, reduced colloid osmosis in the blood, kidney disease, protein leakage gastroenteritis, and low osmotic pressure cause a large amount of fluid to enter the abdominal cavity to form ascites.
3. Liver parenchymal disorders: such as cirrhosis, liver abscess, parenchymal hepatitis, tumors, portal vein embolism, etc., which make it difficult for blood and lymph fluid to return, and portal vein congestion causes water to leak out from the blood vessel wall, causing ascites. .
4. Pulmonary diseases: such as valvular heart disease, chronic pericarditis, hydropericardium, heartworm disease, chronic alveolar emphysema, tuberculosis, tumors, etc., resulting in increased capillary pressure, increased tissue fluid, and edema. and ascites.

Symptoms of hydroabdominal fluid in dogs

The diagnosis can be confirmed based on the results of inspection, palpation, percussion and examination of abdominal puncture fluid.
1. The affected dog shows loss of appetite, rough coat, weight loss, strong thirst, and generally no significant change in body temperature.
2. The appearance of the abdomen changes significantly, with obvious sagging of the abdomen and symmetrical distension on both sides. Abdominal palpation showed fluctuations and watery sound, back and ribs were obviously protruding, progressive weight loss, and reluctance to move.
3. If the ascites continues to increase, the abdomen will become barrel-shaped. Ascites compresses the diaphragm and lungs. Symptoms such as accelerated breathing or difficulty breathing, and hypoxia may be seen.
4. There is a large amount of ascites during abdominal puncture. Leakage is generally the most common type. The color of the liquid is transparent or light yellow, the specific gravity is less than 1.015, and the protein content is less than 2.5%. The exudate is turbid and opaque in color, has a specific gravity higher than 1.018, and a protein content of more than 4%.
