How to measure the temperature of dogs: Rectal thermometry

1. Disinfect the rectal thermometer with alcohol, shake the thermometer well, and let the mercury column reach 35 degrees Celsius.
2. Apply a small amount of Vaseline or olive oil to one end of the rectal thermometer to lubricate it to reduce irritation to the dog's anus when measuring temperature.
3. It is recommended to test when the dog is sleeping or lying down to avoid causing strong resistance from the dog. It is best for one person to help comfort the dog, distract the dog's attention, and measure the temperature alone.
4. Press the dog’s buttocks, raise the dog’s tail, slowly rotate the thermometer, and insert the thermometer into the rectum. The insertion length is approximately half the length of the thermometer.
5. Measure for three minutes. After three minutes, take out the thermometer and observe the data.

1. Disinfect the thermometer with alcohol and shake the thermometer evenly.
2. For small dogs, you can hold them for temperature measurement. For large dogs, it is best for one person to help comfort the dog and measure the temperature alone.
3. Push aside the inner hair of the dog's thigh or choose a place with less hair, press the thigh on the ventral side and clamp the thermometer, just like humans measure armpit temperature.
4. Since the body surface temperature is lower than the rectal temperature, it needs to be measured for 10 minutes before removal. The temperature at this time needs to add 0.5 degrees.

Precautions for taking the dog’s temperature

1. Remember to disinfect the thermometer with alcohol to prevent the dog from being infected with bacteria.
2. The normal body temperature of a dog is generally between 37.7-39.2 degrees. If it exceeds 39.5 degrees, it means that the dog has a fever and needs to see a doctor.
