After a dog swallows a foreign object, the owner first needs to confirm the size of the foreign object and whether it can be digested. If it can be digested, let it be digested slowly. If it cannot be digested, then you need to induce vomiting in time. However, if the foreign body cannot be spit out or the swallowed foreign body is relatively large, then the dog needs to be sent to the pet hospital immediately for surgery to remove it, otherwise it will easily cause pancreatitis, intestinal obstruction and other problems over time.

1. Artificial vomiting

If the dog has just swallowed a foreign object not long ago, the owner can try to use soapy water or diluted hydrogen peroxide to induce the dog to vomit, thereby causing the foreign object to vomit out. Before feeding, you need to restrain the dog, separate the upper and lower jaws of the dog with your hands, pour the prepared emetic agent into the base of the tongue or deep in the mouth, then slowly release your hands and let the dog swallow on its own.

2. Surgery to remove the foreign body

If the effect of inducing vomiting is not good or the foreign body swallowed by the dog is relatively large, it will be difficult for the dog to expel it on its own, so it is recommended that the owner immediately remove the foreign body. Send the dog to the pet hospital for examination to check the location and shape of the foreign body. If necessary, it can be removed through surgery.

Note: When using hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting, special attention needs to be paid to its dosage, because hydrogen peroxide has strong oxidizing properties, and excessive concentration may cause serious damage to the gastrointestinal tract. Therefore, if there are no professionals who can induce vomiting, it is generally recommended that owners use soapy water to induce vomiting in dogs. Although the effect is not as good as hydrogen peroxide, it is safer.
