Symptoms of dog fractures

1. The specific symptoms of fractures are: bone deformation and displacement of both ends of the fracture (such as angular displacement, longitudinal axis displacement, lateral displacement, rotational displacement, etc.) , the affected limb shows abnormal postures such as shortening, bending, and elongation.
2. The second is abnormal activities, such as flexion, rotation and other abnormal activities when the affected limb is subjected to weight-bearing or passive movement (but for fractures of ribs and vertebrae, abnormal activities are not obvious). A bone friction sound can be heard at the broken end of the bone.
3. Symptoms such as bleeding, swelling, pain and dysfunction can be seen.
4. Open fractures are often accompanied by major soft tissue trauma, bleeding and bone fragments. At this time, the sick dog has obvious systemic symptoms, including refusal to eat, pain and uneasiness, and sometimes elevated body temperature.

Causes of dog fractures

1. All kinds of direct or indirect violence can cause dog fractures. Such as falling, running, twisting when jumping, being crushed by heavy objects, muscle traction, sudden strong contraction, etc., can cause fractures.
2. Puppies with diseases such as rickets and osteomalacia often suffer long bone fractures in their limbs even if the external force is not large.

Measures for handling dog fractures

1. Provide emergency rescue at the location of the disease to prevent the fracture end from being displaced or serious complications occurring when moving the sick dog. Emergency first aid includes: first, to stop bleeding, use bandages, cloth strips, ropes, etc. to tie the wound to stop bleeding, apply iodine to the affected area, and spread iodoform-sulfonamide powder into the wound; second, temporarily bandage and fix the fracture, and send it to the veterinarian immediately Clinic treatment.
2. Place the patient in a horizontal position and perform surgery under local anesthesia. When the fractured part of a limb is displaced, the assistant can pull it distally along the axis of the limb to straighten the displaced fractured part so that the two broken ends can be restored correctly. At this time, attention should be paid to whether the limb axis is normal and whether the two limbs are the same length.
3. Perform general cleaning of the affected area of non-open fractures. For open fractures, after general treatment, iodoform-sulfonamide powder is spread on the wound surface, and then fixed with a plaster bandage or a small splint. When fixing, it should be filled with cotton or cotton pads to prevent friction. Minimize movement after fixation. Appropriate movement can be allowed after 3 to 4 weeks. Generally, bandages and splints can be removed after 40 to 60 days.
4. Bone-setting medicine (Yunnan Baiyao, etc.) can be taken orally, and animal growth hormone, calcium tablets, cod liver oil, etc. can be fed. For dogs with open fractures, antibiotics and tetanus antitoxin can be used to prevent infection.
